BEHIND THE BRAND // CONCRETE & WAX

CONCRETE & WAX is an artisan collection of modular, stackable concrete candle holders, accessories and natural wax pillar candles, created to allow customers to design the light in their home by the way they choose to stack and arrange them.
All pieces are hand-poured in small batches in Suffolk by married design duo, Alex Sommer and Laura Keller (a.k.a. Mr Concrete and Mrs Wax). 
concrete & wax modular stackable candles in pink and grey lifestyle photoHaving worked for over two decades in the fashion industry, designing and providing trend forecasts for many casual and sportswear brands; in 2018, they decided to combine their creativity with a new focus to create a collection of timeless artisan products that are built to last.

From some experimental concrete tinkering, inspiration was born. Alex inspired Laura with his concrete creations which made her start thinking about wax, believing that the two contrasting materials would work beautifully together. Some productive candle-making experiments followed and after much R&D, prototyping, sampling and testing, CONCRETE & WAX was born.

“It was incredibly important to us to design products that had a multi-functional purpose, which is why all of our candles are designed specifically to fit in our holders, but the holders are designed to also burn any standard tealight, to allow the concrete the longest life possible. We want each and every piece of concrete to live a full and happy life!”

When it came to the finishing touches, Alex and Laura sourced locally as much as possible and collaborated with local businesses for their print and packaging to keep their footprint as small as possible. Every single item is hand-poured, finished and packaged in their Suffolk workshop.

CONCRETE & WAX’s objective is to light up people’s lives by allowing customers the chance to create unique candleware arrangements to suit their own style, to use their own imagination when designing how their purchased candles can work beautifully together within their homes or work space. It also gives everyone the opportunity to alter that style to suit their mood by simply switching around the way the pieces are stacked. Every item works stylishly alone or can be built upon and combined together to create aesthetically pleasing spaces with delightfully fragranced candles.

CONCRETE & WAX was one of the very First. brands we sourced for our brand collective, loving the beauty in the contrasting materials of concrete and wax. The rawness of the concrete against the silky smooth and wonderfully fragranced natural soy wax.
